Government seizes contaminated maize

The government has seized all contaminated maize which had been sent to various Internally Displaced camps in Nyandarua County, Provincial Administration and Internal Security Permanent Secretary Francis Kimemia has said.

Kimemia said the government had launched investigations to establish the source of that maize and an appropriate action will be taken to whoever will be found responsible for the distribution.

Area MP for Olkalou Erastus Mureithi who complained that there could be a sinister motive behind distribution of the maize whose source had not been established.

The MP advised the IDP's not to feed the maize even to animals saying that the Aflatoxin chemical is transferable from animals to humans through consumption of products like milk and meat.

Earlier Public Health officials from Nyandarua West district had seized over 300 bags of aflatoxin-infested maize supplied to various IDP camps.

Barely a month ago, the government seized over 50 bags of such contaminated maize supplied to IDPs living at Ndatho farm in Subukia area of Nakuru County.

The maize had been supplied by the government to the post election violence victims living at the Ndatho Farm as relief food only to be discovered that it contained the dangerous chemicals.

Samples tested by the Public Health Ministry were found to contain aflatoxin poison that can cause death.

Kimemia at the same time said the government had bought many farms and is in the process of negotiating many others for the purposes of resettling the IDPs who were yet to be resettled.

Affirming the government's commitment, he said the government has also aided in construction of houses and ensuring that IDPs are aided to restart their lives.

The PS was speaking during a prayers meeting to commemorate the creating of Milangine district in Nyandarua County.

The constituencies' population rose drastically to over 200,000 after the post election violence of since it hosted over 37,000 IDPs.
